NEELKANTH MAHADEV TEMPLE

Description

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed according to hindu mythology, that this is the place where Lord Shiva consumed the poison that originated from the sea, when the gods and demons churned the ocean in order to obtain amrita (nectar of life). This poison that emanated during the samundramanthan (churning of ocean) made his throat blue in color. Thus, Lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth literally meaning the blue throat one. The temple is situated at a height of 1330 meters and is located about 32 km from Rishikesh, over looking the Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand. The temple is surrounded by dense forests, mountains and beautiful valleys and it is also a prominent pilgrimage site for Lord Shiva devotees.
